Department of Cardiac Anesthesia
General Info
The department of Cardiac Anaesthesia at Railway Hospital, Perambur is manned by a team of 2 railway medical officers. The DNB Anaesthesia Postgraduate trainees are also posted in the department in rotation to get trained in Cardiac Anaesthesia.
Patients posted for procedures in Cardiac Surgery and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory(Cardiac Cath Lab) are provided services such as Pre-Anaesthesia Check-up, Intraoperative anaesthesia care, Post-operative analgesia and Post-procedure ICU care. The range of procedures done include Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), Valve repairs and replacements, Repair of congenital cardiac anomalies,MICS,VATS,thoracic and lung surgeries, coronary stentings, pacemaker implantations and Transcutaneous Aortic/Mitral valve Implantations. On an average, 2-3 cardiac surgery procedures and 8-10 cardiac cath lab procedures are done everyday.
In addition to the regular anaesthesia services, special services such as :
1) Provision of one-lung ventilation for lung surgeries
2) Fibre-optic guided intubation of difficult airway cases,
3) Transesophageal echocardiography as an intraoperative moditoring tool to diagnose the adecuacy of cardiac repair, instantly monitoring cardiac function
4) providing anesthesia care for minimaly invasive cardiac surgery ( 3 MICS done in last two months) are also provided.
Further, regular classes for DNB Anaesthesia Postgraduate trainees in topics pertaining to cardiac anaesthesia are conducted and various papers and posters on Cardiac Anaesthesia are presented in different conferences and CMEs.
