Dr V Kannan assumed the charge of Medical Director of Southern Railway Head Quarters Hospital in November 2024. He was the Chief Staff Surgeon at the same hospital for three years before being elevated to the post of MD. He has also served as the Chief Medical Superintendent of Solapur Division, Central Railway. Dr V Kannan is currently the Head of the Department of Orthopedics.

Dr V Kannan joined Indian Railway Health Service in 1991 after completing MBBS from Madurai Medical College. He did M.S. Orthopedics from Government Medical College, Patiala, and graduated in 1997, with Gold Medal for his academic performance. He was also awarded the Gold Medal in the Induction Course at RSC, Vadodara. He has served the Indian Railways in the Southern and Central Railway for 33 years in various capacities. He is known for his administrative abilities.

Dr V Kannan served as an Orthopedic Surgeon at ICF Hospital, Chennai for 15 years and is well known for his patient care and surgical excellence. He has a special interest in trauma and replacement surgeries. He has a teaching experience of 27 years. He is an examiner for the Post Graduate DNB course in Orthopedics. He has numerous presentations to his name in State Conferences. He was awarded the Railway Board award for the Best Doctor in 2012 and the ICF GM award in 2009.
